about

Primarily known as a country/honky tonk singer, Halden Wofford has been performing in the mountain west for 20 years with his band the Hi*Beams. This album is some of his quieter piano-based music, written just before the arrival of the pandemic.

Here’s a track listing, with short notes about each song.

1. The Devil’s Interval #1. There are three short instrumentals on my album, each of which is built upon a progression that begins with the Devil’s Interval. This first one is simply two chords rooted on the tri-tone, Bm and Fmaj. They’re meant to be bridges between the other songs. Colin Bricker, aka the Broker Clinic, provided the rhythm track, as he did with other songs on the album.

2. Everything I Love. Originally, I thought this song was written for a friend from high school that I haven’t spoken to in years, but when I reread the lyrics, I realized they were actually just about me. I suppose that’s a problem with writing songs, sometimes they become too much about yourself.
3. The Wolves of Colfax. This is a song about what I feel like is impending doom.

4. Vienneau. I read that since the beginning of quarantine, domestic violence has been on the rise. This is the oldest song on the album. Tory Vienneau was a single mother who was killed in her apartment in San Diego along with her infant son on the night of my 40th birthday. There were no leads in the case for over a year. I’ve always been aware of the constant presence of evil, and there are no shortage of reminders, even as we might be celebrating.

5. The Devil’s Interval #2: This is another version of the progression, starting with the tri-tone, used in “Everything I Love.”

6. Everything You Love. This is a song about getting older, about nostalgia, and about how sometimes what we thought might happen, either doesn’t, or morphs into something unexpected.

7. Colfax Blues. This is an old song, but one I started playing on piano this year. It’s about learning to accept the spiritual side of this life.

8. Oblivion Acres. I saw a real-estate developer’s sign in an empty field one day and I could swear it said “Coming Soon: Oblivion Acres.” This is your average song about losing your mind.

9. The Devil’s Interval #3. This is also the progression from “Everything I Love,” but it is only the piano, in some other room, maybe out there in Oblivion Fields.
